INSIGHT™ is a unique tool that will dramatically improve the prosthesis-fitting process. Developed by the biomedical startup Adapttech, it will be presented at OTWORLD 2018 in Leipzig, Germany.

ADAPTTECH is a biomedical startup with offices in Porto (Portugal) and Birmingham (United Kingdom).  It started only three years ago by the hand of two ambitious Portuguese engineers and entrepreneurs, Mario and Frederico. Since then, it has been constantly growing with an ambitious goal: to reshape the future of the prosthesis-fitting process.

INSIGHT™ is a unique tool that empowers healthcare providers with a faster and easier way to correctly fit lower-limb prosthesis and monitor patient’s entire rehabilitation process (see how it works here). It has three components:

  • the Scanner, which creates a 3D model of the socket in less than 90 seconds;

  • the Wearable device, which gathers real-time data between the stump and the socket, pinpointing exactly(over the previously created 3D Model) where issues are occurring;

  • the App, which allows not only to access and interact with the 3D Model, but also to register and access results anytime, anywhere.

It almost lets us ‘see’ what the patients feel and that is the fulfillment of any technicians’ greatest desire. In my perspective, it may trigger the greatest evolution of the last 30 years in prosthesis fitting, says Pedro Maia, Prosthetist at Padrão Ortopédicoin Porto, Portugal.

INSIGHT™ provides a faster fitting session and speeds-up the whole process of reaching an optimal socket —it dramatically reduces the high number of appointments required to just one or two.

As results of the first pilot in Portugal, the prosthetists considered INSIGHT™ to be faster, easier and more efficient than the traditional method in 81% of the cases (see more info on results below).

This has a huge impact not only on the work of healthcare professionals, but also “It helps us, patients, in achieving more comfort and a better quality of life”, says Marta, a patient from Padrão Ortopédico since young age. “It has a fundamental role in the amputee’s real quality of life and represents a great personal hope of unmeasurable value", underlines Hugo, former captain of the Portuguese National Wheelchair Basketball Team

Adapttech is a biomedical company focused on developing any kind of technologies to help people with physical limitations to improve their quality of life.

A clinical pilot is currently undergoing at the main rehabilitation center in Portugal, “Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão”, to understand the impact of INSIGHT. It included 14 patients so far, with very promising results.

In 3 out of the 14 patients, the system detected a problem not identified by the prosthetist.

In 94% of the cases, INSIGHT was able to identify the problematic points in the socket that needed adjustment.

In 81% of the cases, prosthetists considered INSIGHT to be faster, easier and more efficient than the traditional method.

INSIGHT has shown to reduce the fitting process time in 64%. The time reduction reaches 98% when compared to the current method, if considered the need to leave patients with the prosthesis for a few hours to get a more accurate feedback.
